A bust of national hero Mamia Alasania was unveiled in Zugdidi

On May 6, 2023, the bust of the national hero of Georgia, Mamia Alasania, was unveiled in the park named after Merab Kostava in Zugdidi.

The Bust opening was initiated by the State Service of Veteran Affairs and supported by Zugdidi Municipality City Hall. Today, Mamiya Alasania would have turned 80 years old. The event was attended by the Director of the State Service of Veteran Affairs, Major General Koba Kobaladze, First Deputy, Nikoloz Kvezereli, Deputy Jandri Ubiria, Advisor to the Director, Vladimir Imnadze, Mamia Alasania’s son, Irakli Alasania, Mayor of Zugdidi Municipality, Mamuka Tsoprisata, State Trustee of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Deputies, Davit Kukhaleishvili and Davit Verava, Deputy Chairman of the Government of Abkhazia, Anzor Margiani, members of the Parliament of Georgia, representatives of Samegrelo Division of the Regional Management Department of the State Service of Veteran Affairs, and veterans of war and defense forces.

It is worth mentioning that the bust of Mamia Alasania was erected in the park where the busts of the national heroes of Georgia, Merab Kostava and Geno Adamia, and the memorial to the 1924 rebels are located.

Mamia Alasania was born on May 6, 1943, in the village of Anaklia. In the same year, Alasanias’ family moved to Zugdidi. Mamia Alasania graduated from Zugdidi High School No. 1 in 1961. He was a security colonel. He had taken in various management positions since 1974. Later, he was the head of the Security Committee of the South Ossetia Autonomous District. In 1992-93, he was sent to Samegrelo on a special duty.

On September 27, 1993, he was in the building of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia along with Juli Shartava, the Mayor of Sukhumi, Guram Gabeskiria and other members of the Government of Abkhazia on the day of the fall of Sukhumi. The separatists killed Juli Shartava, Guram Gabeskiria and fifty-year-old Mamia Alasania along with their companions. Through the efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Government of Georgia, the remains of Mamia Alasania, together with the remains of Guram Gabeskiria, were identified and buried with military honors in October 2017 at Dighomi Brothers Cemetery.

Mamia Alasania was awarded the Order of the National Hero of Georgia in 2018.
